Autumnfest at the Aquarium (Service)
Saturday, November 5, 2005

This year's autumn festival called for CASA members to bring out their cultural side. Members helped out with the arts and crafts booth making origami and fish kites with the little tykes that stopped by. Other members helped out with vendors, among which included Origami magic, Palm Leaf Art, Cookie Lee jewelry, Kimekomi dolls, and Kawasaki Designs. Several dance troupes and Taiko drummers entertained attendees throughout the day. And of course, who could forget the performances by Art Nakane's one man band?

In addition to the festivities, the usual aquarium exhibits were open, most exciting being the "Shark Lagoon"where participants were allowed to touch real live sharks. Fish, food, and fun, who could ask for anything more?

CASA members decked out in their best attire volunteered at the Chinese American Museum (CAM) Ninth Annual Historymakers Awards banquet at the Hilton Hotel in San Gabriel. Members worked the silent auction where they worked diligently to sell various items donated graciously by local businesses. Among some of the more unique items: dinner at ESPN’s Sport Zone and a live TV show taping of sports anchor Rob Fukuzaki, roundtrip airline tickets to Hong Kong, and antique ginger jars.

The event was hosted by Ted Chen, reporter for NBC, and Linda Sun, Deputy Attorney General for the California Department of Justice. During dinner, the guests were treated to a dance performance by the Halau Hula “O Kawahineali’inoho’ikeanuenue-‘elua dance troupe. Try saying that 10 times! Among the honorees tonight were Andre and Peggy Cherng for Excellence in Culinary Culture, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard for Excellence in Government, Kenjohn Wang for Excellence in Business and Immigration, William Chun-Hoon for Lifetime Achievement, and Joseph and Betty Wong for the Visionary Award.

The volunteers had a fun time mingling with the guests, some had fun mingling with Ted Chen, and others had fun mingling with the Miss Chinatown Princesses! Looking forward to the 10th annual CAM banquet

Anniversary Dinner and Awards Banquet (Social)
Saturday, August 20, 2005

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Another year has come and gone and once again, CASA celebrates it's anniversary with a dinner among friends. This year's locale was the Indian restaurant in San Gabriel, which serves Chinese food, despite the its Native American moniker. Amid the tasty dishes, members, young and old, chatted about past events and enjoyed themselves until the "birthday" cake arrived in front of outgoing President George. Our President even bestowed handwritten certificates of recognition to select members this evening. A special thanks to Dr. Pan for her generous gifts of appreciation for members who attended the Hepatitis B and Liver Cancer Awareness service event.

Hollywood Bowl (Social)

Roughly 15 CASA volunteers came out to the Hollywood Bowl on July 30th to partake in a potluck picnic and enjoy a concert. Members brought homemade dumplings, sushi, cream puffs, and fruit salad to name a few scrumptious dishes. We camped out at picnic area 3, ate for a couple of hours, and laughed about the sheer amount of food that we had brought. So when the concert was about to start, we continued our picnic at our seats.

The concert was a spectacular display of vocal talent as three female sopranos performed with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra. It was a special occasion for the Bowl orchestra as they marked their 300th performance. At the end of the show, we were treated to a finale that included all three sopranos on stage simultaneously and a fantastic fireworks display.

The weather was perfect, the food was perfect, and the show was perfect. We’ll do it again next year!

Citizenship Workshop (Service)

As we approach the anniversary of our nation's independence, CASA held (in conjunction with the Asian Pacific Legal Center) an event helping people who wished to become citizens of the United States and share in the fortunes and rights that we enjoy. Roughly 35 volunteers came out on June 25th to help these applicants walk through this sometimes labyrinthian process and insure that their paperwork was in order. Amidst our volunteers were people who could speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Spanish, and Taiwanese. In addition, we had a few lawyers that assisted with the legal process and answered the applicants' beauratic concerns. CASA ended the day with a trip to Cha for shaved ice and socializing. All in all, this was a great afternoon for applicants and volunteers alike.

In theme with the athletics-related service event the day before, CASA's members gathered for a friendly game of softball at La Loma park in the city of Monterey Park. In spite of summer-like weather, the teams scored over 25 runs combined. Team 1 jumped out to an early lead in the first inning and never looked back. Team 2 chipped away at the lead but couldn't overcome the deficit. There was talk of a rematch, but with other teams looking to take the field, it would have to wait for the next social. Afterwards, we rewarded ourselves with shaved ice, boba, and food at Cha in Alhambra.

Youth Olympics (Service)

A large contingent of kids braved the blazing hot sun to compete in APEX's annual Youth Olympics. This year's event took place at East Los Angeles College, just south of Monterey Park. A live DJ played music as the kids engaged in classic games like dodgeball, tug-of- war, the relay race, and the obstacle course. Lunch-time entertainment included dancers, martial arts performances, and a visit from Miss Chinatown and her court. As volunteers, we helped with logistics, registration, games setup and officiating, and some even got to compete with the kids.
